John Scott did not originally plan on becoming a cigar roller. After retiring from a 33-year career in telecommunications, he began spending time in cigar lounges, drawn to both the craftsmanship and the culture surrounding premium cigars. What started as curiosity gradually became something deeper, eventually leading him to train with a Cuban cigar roller in Texas and build Blue Hen Torcedor into a live event experience centered around conversation, tradition, and hospitality.

Today, guests gather around the rolling station not just to watch cigars being made, but to understand the process behind them. John walks people through different tobacco leaves, explains how aging and blending affect flavor, and answers questions throughout the evening as he rolls each cigar by hand.

He often compares cigars to wine. Different regions, wrappers, and aging processes all influence the final flavor profile, creating distinctions many guests have never considered before experiencing the process in person.

“A cigar is a celebratory thing,” he explains. “You graduate college, you have your child, you get married. That’s when people smoke cigars.”
